Menstrual Cycle Pain In The You Know What

We all know how tough it is to cope with our menstrual cycles, some more than the other. To deal with the horrible pains and discomfort, during this time of the month, Indians have been using a drink called Kava for centuries. It is a mixture of herbs and spices that are boiled in water to make a potent medicine that efficiently eases the pain and cleans out your system. Normally, when I was given this Kava, my mother would say that it would clean you out. While that is true due to its thermal effect on our body, but what they meant was that the heat produced in your body, by drinking kava, soothes the pain from menstruation as your body cleans itself out. The effect of this kava on female reproductive organs is of muscle relaxing and distressing because it is antispasmodic, anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory. I am sharing my mother’s recipe of kava, which is a lifesaver.

For this recipe you will need:

  • 1 ½ cup water
  • 4 green cardamoms
  • 2 black cardamom
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 table spoon celery seeds
  • 1 table spoon fennel seeds
  • 1 inch of cinnamon stick
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 7-10 basil leaves

How to make Kava:

  • Crush and grate the above ingredients enough to be able to boil the beneficial properties out of them.
  • Add the ingredients into water and boil on low heat for about 45 minutes.
  • Once it is done it should smell aromatic and should look dark brown.
  • Strain it and drink it hot.

Drink this mixture a day before your period and during your period. You can drink it 1-2 times a day.

Other helpful tips during menstrual cycles to follow:

  • Drink Pomegranate juice
  • Eat Beets
  • Avoid Lemon and any citrus foods like pickles.
