Rhythmic discovery: TRAPPIST-1

NASA announced the discovery of 7 planets orbiting a dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1, which is 40 light years away.

This new discovery reminds me of hymns in the Guru Granth Saheb Ji, the Sikh Holy scripture, where the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469-1539), talks about planets. During his time, when the smartest minds on Earth were just stumbling across the idea of space, he wrote about planets far from our planet and more earths far from our earth. In the following hymn, he poses a question to the people who believed that earth was supported on the horns of a bull.

“Dhavle upar keta bhaar dharti hor pare hor hor tis de bhaar tale kavan jor” Translated to English it means, “If you believe that this earth is supported by a bull then tell me what is supporting the other earths(planets/stars)—-there are so many earths(planets/stars) far from this and further more”

Beautiful Universe
